Hottentot's Vandalism

[edit]

I think if someone is just blanket reverting all your edits, it would be called vandalism. He's upset because he holds the same view as mainland China, and he disagrees with a neutral BBC article. The article only states the facts, it doesn't take sides. Here is the article for YOUR review. What do YOU think? Honestly.

If you review Hottentot's comments, he also threatened to just revert all my edits. That is pure vandalism.--FT in Leeds 02:27, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's a news article from the BBC, one of the most reputable news agencies on the entire planet. It's not run by the government, like mainland China's Xinhua. You can't get more credible and just plain truthful than this. Additionally, why does a link have to be totally NPOV? It's a link. The encylopedia should allow people to find the truth, not just something that pleases everyone all the time.--FT in Leeds 02:36, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I see you're still around (last edit 10/4/05) - do you have a minute to move the BCOTW along or shall I step in while you're busy? Kaisershatner 14:53, 7 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kaisershatner 17:28, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Falphin, thanks for your feedback about the BCOTW. I've enjoyed it too much to let it be idle while you're busy (and I appreciate for that reason all you've done with the BCOTW). I'm glad you liked my edits to the project page. Kaisershatner 23:54, 10 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your note. Of course I don't mind you updating the page. I'll just fill in when/if you're too busy. However, I do think we should trim the nominees (with all due respect, Shirazis etc. have been hanging there too long) to keep the page fresh, especially now that there are a few new ones on the list. It may also help attract more collaborators. Kaisershatner 15:55, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

War or war

[edit]

No I was not aware of this. I was just following a more general policy. The only similar case I know is the Football war article as I am interested in Latin America rather than in wars. I don't have strong feelings on this subject, SqueakBox 01:21, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your vote on Sicilian Baroque - it needed it (and so did my self confidence!). I've answered your query briefly on the FAC page. I agree lists are to be avoided, but I felt there in such a long article the defining features were so important they had to stand out clearly or they would be swallowed and lost in the text, and then people would find themselves looking at the pictures, and then not have a clue what they were supposed to be looking for. Personally I would have liked a longer caption to each picture explaining each feature directly, but I did that once before on a Featured article, and every one complained about that too, saying long captions were to be avoided. I think there's an English idiom somewhere "you can please some of the people all the time, and all the people none of the time" I've probably got that wrong too, but you know what I mean. The response to Sicilian Baroque, so far, has been a bit disappointing, as I thought it was the best thing I had done - but I suppose some you win some you loose. Thanks for the vote very much. Giano | talk 10:44, 23 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I know that people often make the mistake (I'd say that at least a quarter of the undergraduate essays that I mark make it), but I couldn't find a single printed example. It seems to be primarily an Internet phenomenon, though it may well have a more respectable source. One colleague suggested (purely speculativel, and with no real knowledge of the area) that Church Latin might have turned "Theologiae" into "Theologica", but I can't think why that should be. Does my compromise of "sometimes" work for you? --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 23:21, 2 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Latvia's flags

[edit]

I have no idea. See, I dug out the law from a law database at Lithuanian parliament. I could not find such thing on Latvian parliament' site. I don't speak Latvian any case. There is a very good chance, that it is somewhere, and it has the copyright law that would allow such use (well, Lithuania & Poland has it). You should ask some Latvian-speaking person (through Babel). Or you could redraw the flag. It does not look too quality anyhow. And I am glad you've asked, just sorry I cannot help you much. Fakauʻa

[edit]

I have noticed that in several entries you have changed the fakauʻa (glottal stop) in Tongan words from the straight apostrophe (') to the curly open quote (‘). I think you should not do that. Unicode convention is not to use the openquote (leave that with its brother closequote to quoting) but use the special 0x02BB symbol instead, which is dedicated for that. See the okina article and talk for more information. To allow for non-compliance by Microsoft driven systems for the moment the { {okina} } template can be sued. Just because there is confusion about the proper shape, and people not aware of it will tend to type in the apostrophe anyway, I have made the following rule for myself: all Tongan (and Polynesian) words with a glottal are entered with an apostrophe, but appear with the proper accent in printing, like this: ʻAhoʻeitu.

I hope that you can agree with this, unless you have a better suggestion of course. --Tauʻolunga 20:08, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Great call on Northern Wars

[edit]

Hey I noticed the revert between you and Y on my watchlist. I see for some reason most of the articles include both wars, but the danish version for example, doesn't seem to mention the war in 1665. Another example is the Dutch. Besides that, most of the articles have very little mention of the 1665 war, and instead only include a bit of background info. Shouldn't these links be removed and left with only the articles on the 1665 war. Falphin 22:26, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You and Yvwv are right! I stand corrected; read in haste—repent in leisure. Very well done indeed. I rereverted. Takk - Williamborg 02:08, 2 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Just for your information, off of the AfS page

there are several results in dutch on the web. I'm not really sure of the notability if this is the same person as Professor Léon-Bernard Giot. Falphin 00:48, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Someone on French Wikipedia has alerted someone on Dutch Wikipedia and hopefully, he will respond. I work in the music business in Europe and no one I know has heard of him. We'll see what the Dutch have to say about this. This is the same person as "Professor Léon-Bernard Giot", per a re-direct on the French site. Looking at the edit history of the Dutch article, I see that gidonb has made several edits on the Dutch version. Perhaps he might be able to comment? Musikfabrik 09:27, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi Musikfabrik, the Dutch Wikipedia is not equally strict with notability. From what I can understand LBG is a part-time musician who apparently also gives some lessons. Some of the information comes from a long-time participant at nl.wikipedia who knows him. LBG pointed out on the talk page that the title "professor" is not protected, i.e. anyone can carry it. He uses the name International whatever school to describe his lesson practice. Personally, I do not believe that this is the best way to promote art, but Wikipedia is not a promotional site anyway. He has had second thoughts as well, because in the past he asked to delete the talk page for his Dutch article. It has been archived, with which he is unhappy. The article here is a promotional text, full of exaggerations. It was created, not by himself, after he had placed a request to be included in en.wikipedia. At his website there are some clippings from the local press, mostly about his ideas on better breathing. He suggests that he should become minister of breathing of Belgium (or was it one of its "states"). This suggestion attracted mild interest from the local press. gidonb 10:20, 7 May 2006 (UTC)

Best wishes, Musikfabrik 18:59, 8 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed that you had made a comment about a year ago on Wikipedia:Reference desk archive/Miscellaneous/September 2005 regarding the People to People Student Ambassador Program.

What I'm asking is if you have obtained any additional information about this group beyond what you found out. It is heartbreaking to talk to my son who just got one of those letters, talk about going to exotic places (which is a dream of his), only to have his dreams dashed because it turns out this is a massive scam.

I tried to do a Google Search on this topic and I have been unable to find from their websites anything that talks about the costs involved with this experience, but I have found a notice from the Iowa Attorney General's Office that was complaining about a woman who got a letter of acceptance for a son that died when he was only seven months old. I'm sure there is more.

The main Wikipedia article seems to be very POV in terms of how glowingly useful the project is, and I strongly suspect some astroturfing going on there. This article is clearly on my radar now as a major Wikipedian, and I'm not going to let this one go. I do plan on a strong investigative review of this group, and perhaps even doing a Wikinews article about this if I'm not happy. Yeah, that is POV, but I also want to be merciless if this truly is a scam.

While I have no doubt that the students actually travel abroad, I strongly suspect this is just a way for a group of travel agents to make some extra money in a less than honorable fashion. I've also heard about nightmares from travel groups like this where kids show up in the "host country", only to find out the tour operator has skipped town and they don't have a return ticket to come home and none of the other accomodations have been taken care of or paid for.

Anything you found out about this group would be appreciated. --Robert Horning 20:51, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

—Thank you for your message yesterday. Sorry I messed up. I thought I was writing a note, not editing. I am less than experienced with all this. All I'm trying to do is have the quote marks around my uncle's name in the first sentence of the article removed. My Aunt Jean, Duffy's sister, thinks the quotes imply that Duffy was a nickname.
